One of the most common questions we get at our Surrey office is: "I have a criminal record. Can I still get my license?"
The answer is not a simple "No." It depends on the nature of the offense, how much time has passed, and the decision of the Registrar of Security Services.
What the Registrar Looks For
The Core Requirement: To hold a security license, you must be of "Good Character."
When you submit your fingerprints (a mandatory step we guide you through), the Registrar reviews your history. They look at:
- Relevance: Was the offense related to violence, fraud, or theft? These are "red flags" for security work.
- Recency: Did the incident happen 10 years ago, or last month? Older offenses are often viewed less severely.
- Disposition: Was it a conviction, or was it withdrawn/dismissed?
What If I Have a Record?
If you have a serious conviction that has not been pardoned (Record Suspension), your application may be denied. However, for minor issues, you may be asked to provide a written explanation or character references.
Note: We are trainers, not lawyers. If you are unsure, we recommend contacting the Security Programs Division directly before paying for a course.
