Legally, WHMIS 2015 certificates do not have a printed expiry date. The law simply states that workers must be "knowledgeable" and training must be reviewed annually.
The Employer Standard
Most employers in Surrey will not accept a certificate older than 1 year, or sometimes 3 years. They need proof that your knowledge is fresh.
When Should You Retake the Course?
- New Job: Every workplace has different hazards. A new employer will likely want you to recertify.
- Forgot the Info: If you can't remember what the "Exclamation Mark" pictogram means, you are a danger to yourself. Retake the course.
- Annual Review: Many companies have a policy of annual renewal to limit liability.
