Minutes matter in a crisis. Learn to recognize and respond to the most critical emergencies with expert Red Cross training from RupIELTS Institute in Surrey and Edmonton.
Recognizing a Heart Attack
A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked. The signs can be sudden and intense, or start slowly. Knowing both classic and subtle signs is key.
Classic Signs
- Persistent chest pain, pressure, or tightness
- Pain radiating to the arm(s), shoulder, neck, or jaw
- Shortness of breath
- Cool, sweaty skin
"Soft" Signs
- Mild, unfocused chest discomfort
- Extreme fatigue or weakness
- Nausea, vomiting, or gastric discomfort
- Dizziness or light-headedness
What To Do
CALL 911 immediately and get an AED.
Have the person rest quietly.
If directed, help them chew 1 regular-strength or 2 low-dose ASA (Aspirin) tablets.
Recognizing a Stroke: Act FAST
A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. Use the FAST acronym to spot the signs.
F
FACE
Ask the person to smile. Is one side drooping?
A
ARMS
Ask them to raise both arms. Does one drift down?
S
SPEECH
Is their speech slurred or strange?
T
TIME
Time is critical. Call 911 immediately.
Responding to Life-Threatening Bleeding
External Bleeding: Control the Flow
1. CALL 911. Your first priority is getting help on the way.
2. APPLY DIRECT PRESSURE. Using a clean cloth or sterile dressing, apply firm, direct pressure to the wound.
3. BANDAGE. While maintaining pressure, apply a pressure bandage to hold the dressing in place. If blood soaks through, add another bandage on top.
Tourniquets:
If direct pressure does not control the bleeding, a tourniquet may be needed. Apply it 5-10 cm above the injury. This is a last resort and requires proper training, which we provide in our certified courses.
Internal Bleeding: A Hidden Danger
Look for bruising, swelling, tenderness, and signs of shock. If you suspect internal bleeding:
CALL 911 immediately and have the person rest quietly until help arrives.
