Your Guide to CPR and AED: The Skills That Save Lives

When someone suffers a sudden cardiac arrest, you can be their hero. Learn the critical steps of CPR and how to use an AED with our expert training in Surrey and Edmonton.

When to Perform CPR

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure for a person whose heart has stopped beating. You should start CPR immediately if you find someone who is:

Unresponsive

Not Breathing Normally

CPR keeps oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and other vital organs until professional medical help arrives.

How to Perform CPR on an Adult or Child

1

CALL 911 & GET AN AED

If you are alone with an adult, call 911 yourself. If you are alone with a child, perform 5 cycles of CPR (about 2 minutes) before calling 911.

2

PUSH: 30 CHEST COMPRESSIONS

Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest, with your other hand on top. Push hard and fast at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. Allow the chest to fully recoil between pushes.

3

BREATHE: 2 RESCUE BREATHS

Tilt the head back, lift the chin, and give two breaths (about 1 second each), just enough to make the chest begin to rise.

REPEAT THE CYCLE

Continue the cycle of 30 compressions and 2 breaths until help arrives or the person shows obvious signs of life.

How to Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

An AED is a life-saving device that can shock a heart back into a normal rhythm. They are designed to be used by anyone, even without training. Just turn it on and follow the voice prompts.

1.Turn on the AED and follow its voice commands.
2.Expose the chest and apply the pads as shown in the diagrams.
3.Plug in the connector, if necessary.
4.Ensure NO ONE is touching the person.
5.Press the flashing "SHOCK" button if instructed.
6.Immediately resume CPR after the shock.
