Step 1: Basic Security Training (BST) β Your Foundation
The Basic Security Training (BST) is the mandatory 40-hour course approved by the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC). It is the first and most crucial step to becoming a licensed security professional in British Columbia.
What You Will Learn in BST:
- Professionalism & Ethics: Understand the role and responsibilities of a security professional.
- Legal Studies: Learn the laws and regulations relevant to security work in BC.
- Report Writing: Master the skills of observation and documentation.
- Personal Safety: Techniques to ensure your safety and the safety of others.
Upon successful completion and passing the provincial exam, you'll receive your training certificate, making you eligible to apply for your BC Security Worker License.
Step 2: Advanced Security Training (AST) β Elevate Your Skills
For security professionals in higher-risk roles, the Advanced Security Training (AST) is essential. This 24-hour course is a prerequisite for any licensed individual who needs to carry and use restraints, such as handcuffs.
AST Course Highlights:
Security Services Act & Regulations
Application of Restraints & Control Tactics
Excited Delirium & Positional Asphyxia
Advanced Force Options Theory
Professional Reporting & Documentation
Personal Safety & Well-being
Prerequisite: You MUST hold a valid BC Security Worker License (from completing BST) before you can enroll in the AST course.
Navigating Your BC Security License
License Renewal
Your BC Security License must be renewed to remain valid. You'll typically receive an email reminder with an access code about 3 months before expiry. The renewal process is done online and requires:
- A valid, unexpired security license.
- A clean criminal record.
- Payment of the renewal fee.
Don't let it expire! Renewing on time is much simpler than reapplying for a new license.
Coming from Another Province?
British Columbia requires all security professionals to hold a valid BC Security Worker License. Licenses from other provinces like Alberta, Ontario, etc., are not directly transferable.
The Process: You must apply for a new BC license. However, the government may recognize your training from another province as equivalent to the BST. You will likely still need to challenge and pass the BC provincial security exam to prove your knowledge of local laws and regulations.
We can guide you through this process to make your transition to working in BC security as smooth as possible!
