IELTS Academic writing: How electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.

πŸ“ Surrey, BC

The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station IELTS Writing.

Answer:

The figure illustrates the process of electricity production in a hydroelectric power station.

Overall, the electricity generation is broadly separated into day and night stages. The current production starts by collecting water from a river in a reservoir and ends with transmission of electric currents through national grid.

In the first step, the water from river is channelized to a high level reservoir which is backed up with a dam. The gates of the dam are open during the day time and closed in the night. In the following stage in the day, the water is directed to the reversible turbines which generates electricity. In the next stage, the current is distributed through power lines to national grid after passing through a generator. Finally, the remaining water is pumped to a low level reservoir during the day.

In the night time, the process is reversed as the water stored in low level reservoir is pumped back to high level reservoir with the help of reversible turbines. The water is reserved there until the next cycle begins.
