IELTS 18 Academic Test-2 Essay

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Answer : Agree with first view
Some college students are interested in exploring topics beyond their major fields of study. However, some students think it’s crucial to devote all their energy and focus on earning their degree
In my opinion, university education should not be limited to the main subjects. I believe that learning about other subjects in addition to the main ones can provide a well-rounded education and foster intellectual curiosity.

Firstly, learning about other subjects can broaden students’ perspectives. It allows them to understand the world from different viewpoints, which is crucial in today’s interconnected world. For instance, a computer science student learning about sociology can gain insights into how technology impacts society.

Secondly, studying other subjects can enhance students’ critical thinking skills. It encourages them to think from different angles and solve problems creatively. For example, a business student studying philosophy can learn to question assumptions and think more deeply about business ethics.

On the other hand, some students believe that focusing solely on their main subjects is more important. They argue that this approach allows them to gain in-depth knowledge in their field of study, which is essential for their future careers. For instance, a medical student needs to master a vast amount of information to become a competent doctor.

Additionally, concentrating on the main subjects can help students prepare for professional qualifications. These qualifications are often required for certain careers, and achieving them can open up job opportunities. For example, an accounting student needs to pass specific exams to become a certified public accountant.

In conclusion, while focusing on the main subjects has its merits, I believe that learning about other subjects offers significant benefits. It not only broadens students’ perspectives but also enhances their critical thinking skills. Therefore, universities should encourage students to explore subjects outside their main field of study to provide a well-rounded education.
