IELTS Writing Test Structure
The IELTS Writing test lasts 60 minutes and consists of two tasks. Both tasks must be completed, with Task 2 carrying twice the weight of Task 1 in scoring.
Academic Task 1
Describe visual information (graphs, charts, diagrams, maps) in at least 150 words. 20 minutes recommended.
General Training Task 1
Write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) of at least 150 words. 20 minutes recommended.
Task 2 (Both)
Write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem. At least 250 words. 40 minutes recommended.

Academic Task 1 Mastery
Line Graphs
Describe trends over time using appropriate vocabulary: increase, decrease, fluctuate, remain stable, peak, plummet.
Bar Charts & Pie Charts
Compare data using comparative structures. Focus on significant differences and overall patterns.
Process Diagrams
Describe stages sequentially using passive voice and sequencing words: firstly, subsequently, finally.
Maps & Plans
Describe locations and changes using spatial language and appropriate tenses for different time periods.
Task 1 Structure Template
- Introduction (1-2 sentences): Paraphrase the question
- Overview (2-3 sentences): Main trends/features without specific data
- Body 1 (3-4 sentences): First set of details with data
- Body 2 (3-4 sentences): Second set of details with data
General Training Task 1 - Letter Writing
Formal Letters
To officials, companies, or strangers. Use formal vocabulary, no contractions, respectful tone.
Semi-formal Letters
To employers or colleagues. Professional but slightly relaxed tone, limited contractions.
Informal Letters
To friends or family. Casual language, contractions allowed, personal tone.
Purpose Types
Request, complaint, apology, invitation, advice, explanation - each with specific language patterns.
Task 2 Essay Types & Strategies
Opinion Essays
"To what extent do you agree?" State clear position, support with reasons and examples throughout.
Discussion Essays
"Discuss both views" Present both sides objectively before giving your opinion in conclusion.
Problem-Solution Essays
Identify problems in one paragraph, propose practical solutions in another. Be specific.
Two-Part Questions
Answer both questions equally. Dedicate one body paragraph to each question part.
Advantages-Disadvantages
Balance both sides unless asked for opinion. Use comparative language effectively.
Direct Questions
Answer all parts directly. Structure depends on number and type of questions asked.
