There are multiple ways to improve overall health of a community, ample availability of sports facilities is one of them. However, in my opinion, there are multiple factors affecting the general public health. And, some factors like clean water, better food, hygiene and clean environment are more important to create a basic floor.
Here in the western countries, where often the basic floor is already achieved. Ample availability of sports facilities will definitely encourage people to get out more. Also, these facilities will provide people with better alternative to gym membership; because, team playing in most sports creates an accountability measure and people are less likely to quit.
However, in countries like India where much of the population does not have access to basic minimums of life, showering sports facilities will be similar to patching bullet wounds with multiple band aids. Instead, investing all those funds in digging new wells, ample electricity, food etcetera will be better and go further in improving social health.
In conclusion, increasing the number of sports facilities is not a one fix all policy. Public health stands on many pillars and solid foundation of basic needs is needed first, before we start building those pillars. Otherwise, all the efforts will go in vain.
