IELTS 18 Academic Test-1 essay

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement ?

Answer 1 : Fully agree

Science is a vast field that touches every aspect of our lives. In my opinion, the most important aim of science should indeed be to improve people’s lives. I wholeheartedly agree with this statement as I believe that the true value of scientific advancements lies in their ability to enhance the quality of life for all.

The first reason for my agreement is the role of science in health and medicine. Science has led to the discovery of numerous treatments and cures for diseases that were once considered fatal. For example, the development of antibiotics has saved countless lives by effectively treating bacterial infections. Similarly, advancements in medical technology, such as MRI machines, have revolutionized the way diseases are diagnosed and treated.

The second reason is the impact of science on our daily lives. From the electricity that powers our homes to the smartphones that keep us connected, science is at the heart of modern conveniences. These scientific innovations have not only made our lives easier but also more efficient. For instance, the internet, a product of computer science, has transformed the way we work, learn, and communicate.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that the primary goal of science should be to improve people’s lives. The advancements in health and medicine, along with the impact of science on our daily lives, clearly demonstrate the potential of science to enhance our quality of life. Therefore, as we continue to explore the vast realm of science, we must always remember its ultimate purpose: to make life better for all.

Answer 2: Fully Disagree

In my opinion, while improving people’s lives is a significant aspect of science, it should not be considered as its most important aim. I believe that the primary goal of science should be the pursuit of knowledge and understanding of the natural world.

Firstly, science is about discovery and exploration. It aims to unravel the mysteries of the universe, from the smallest particles to the vastness of space. This quest for knowledge often leads to advancements that can improve people’s lives, but the primary motivation remains the thirst for understanding.

Secondly, science is not always about immediate practical applications. Many scientific breakthroughs, such as Einstein’s theory of relativity or the discovery of quantum mechanics, did not have immediate applications. However, they fundamentally changed our understanding of the universe and eventually led to technologies we use today.

Furthermore, focusing solely on improving people’s lives can limit the scope of scientific research. Not all research has immediate practical benefits, but that does not diminish its value. For instance, research in pure mathematics may not have direct applications, but it contributes to the overall body of knowledge.

In addition, science also plays a crucial role in challenging existing beliefs and societal norms. It encourages critical thinking and promotes a fact-based understanding of the world, which is essential for the progress of society.

In conclusion, while science undoubtedly plays a crucial role in improving people’s lives, it should not be its most important aim. The pursuit of knowledge and understanding should always be at the heart of scientific endeavors. This approach ensures that science continues to push the boundaries of our understanding and contributes to societal progress in the broadest sense.
