Mastering Wound Care: From Cuts to Burns
Cuts and Scrapes
1. Apply direct pressure to control bleeding.
2. Rinse the wound with clean, running water for 5 minutes.
3. Apply a sterile bandage.
Burns (Heat, Chemical, Electrical)
1. Cool the burn with cool running water for at least 10 minutes.
2. Remove nearby jewelry and clothing that isn't stuck to the skin.
3. Cover loosely with a dry, sterile dressing.
Call 911 for severe burns.
Impaled Objects
CRITICAL RULE: DO NOT REMOVE THE OBJECT.
1. Leave the object in place.
2. Use bulky dressings to stabilize it and prevent movement.
3. Secure the dressings in place.
4. Call 911 immediately.
Head, Neck, and Spine Injuries: The Golden Rule
"If you suspect a spinal injury, keep the person STILL."
Unnecessary movement is the biggest danger. Your primary role is to prevent further injury until emergency medical services arrive.
When to Suspect It
- Fall from a height greater than the person
- Strong blow to the head or torso
- Diving injury
- Person found unresponsive
What to Look For
- Severe pain in head, neck, or back
- Tingling or weakness in limbs
- Loss of bladder/bowel control
- Blood or fluid from ears or nose
Understanding Concussions
A concussion is a brain injury that must be taken seriously. Look for physical signs (headache, dizziness), mental changes (confusion, memory loss), and emotional shifts (irritability).
Any person with a suspected concussion must stop all activity immediately and see a healthcare provider.
