Head, Neck, and Spine Injuries: The Golden Rule

"If you suspect a spinal injury, keep the person STILL."

Unnecessary movement is the biggest danger. Your primary role is to prevent further injury until emergency medical services arrive.

When to Suspect It

  • Fall from a height greater than the person
  • Strong blow to the head or torso
  • Diving injury
  • Person found unresponsive

What to Look For

  • Severe pain in head, neck, or back
  • Tingling or weakness in limbs
  • Loss of bladder/bowel control
  • Blood or fluid from ears or nose

Understanding Concussions

A concussion is a brain injury that must be taken seriously. Look for physical signs (headache, dizziness), mental changes (confusion, memory loss), and emotional shifts (irritability).

Any person with a suspected concussion must stop all activity immediately and see a healthcare provider.
