We see it happen every week at RupIELTS. A frantic security guard or construction worker calls us on a Monday morning: "My boss just checked my card, it expired yesterday, and I can't work until I renew it!"
In British Columbia, WorkSafeBC regulations are strict. An expired certificate means you are no longer a qualified First Aid Attendant. Period.
β οΈ THE MYTH: "There is a 30-day grace period."
THE TRUTH: There is NO grace period for working. If your card expires today, you cannot work as a First Aid Attendant tomorrow.
The Timeline of Validity
Year 0 - 3: Valid
Your OFA Level 1, 2, or 3 certificate is valid for exactly 3 years from the date of issuance. You are good to work.
30 Days Before Expiry
ACT NOW. This is the golden window. Book your renewal course now so there is no gap in your ability to earn money.
Day of Expiry
Your certification is void. If you continue to act as the designated First Aid Attendant, your employer can be heavily fined.
Recertification vs. Full Course
Do you have to take the whole course again?
For OFA Level 1:
Yes. The course is only 1 day (8 hours). There is no "shortened" version because the curriculum changes frequently. You simply retake the 1-day class.
For OFA Level 2 & 3:
Sometimes you can take a shorter "Recertification" exam challenge, but only if your certificate has not yet expired. Once it expires, you usually have to take the full course again. This is why booking early is crucial.
What if I Lost My Card?
If your card is still valid but you lost the physical copy, don't panic. If you trained with RupIELTS, contact our office. We can often issue a replacement or a temporary record of training for a small admin fee. If you trained elsewhere, you must contact that specific agency.
