Course Syllabus (24 Hours)
Our curriculum follows the strict JIBC standards. The course combines classroom theory with active physical training.
Module 1: Legal Authority
Understanding the Criminal Code of Canada, Use of Force Framework, and your legal rights to arrest and search.
Module 2: Tactile Communication
Verbal de-escalation strategies. How to talk down aggressive subjects before using force.
Module 3: Restraint Systems
Safe handcuffing techniques (standing, kneeling, prone). compliant vs. non-compliant handcuffing.
Module 4: Control Tactics
Empty hand defense, vascular neck restraint safety, takedowns, and escort positions.
Module 5: Reporting
Proper articulation of force. How to write an incident report that protects you legally.
⚠️ Course Prerequisites
- Must be at least 19 years of age.
- Must hold a valid BST Certificate or BC Security Worker License.
- Must be physically capable of performing the techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a valid license to take AST?
Yes. You cannot take AST without first completing BST. You must have a valid BST certificate or a security worker license.
Is the physical training difficult?
It is active. You will be practicing takedowns and handcuffing on mats. You do not need to be an athlete, but you must have a reasonable level of fitness and no serious injuries.
Does this cover Recertification?
Yes. AST expires every 3 years. This course qualifies as your recertification training to renew your Advanced Security authorization.
What happens if I fail the exam?
The passing grade is 75% for the written exam. If you fail, you can re-write the exam. Our instructors have a very high pass rate for students.
